A heart patient who has just had his third implanted cardiac defibrillator (ICD) fitted has written a book to raise money for a Bolton support group.
David Makinson wants the money to go towards providing defibrillators for schools and sports clubs to help save lives. The 48 year old author was born with a complex congenital heart condition and spent the first few month of his life in hospital.
Mr Makinson had two major heart operations when he was three years old and nine years old, which means he is now able to live a normal life. He enjoys sport and was passionate about playing hockey. But in 2000, while on a charity bike ride between Manchester and Blackpool, the then 36 year old experienced a potentially fatal heart arrhythmia.
The father of one, from Lostock had his first ICD fitted, which will re-start his heart if a serious arrhythmia happens again. But Mr Makinson has to go for regular three monthly check-ups on both his heart and the ICD , and two weeks ago it was changed for the third time. He said “I was lucky it didn’t kill me really. Up to that point, although, I had cardio problems as a child, I had been fine. I was very fit, which was just as well as otherwise my heart would have gone into arrest. I have had two devices now and am on my third one and I thought that I have had so much out of the system that I should give something back.” Mr Makinson has written a short ebook called “The Unwelcome Guests”, which is intended to highlight the plight of people suffering from the life-long illnesses which his compares to having an unwanted guest. He wants the money to go to the Bolton ICD Support Group.
Mr Makinson said: “When you have a heart problem, it is quite an enxious time and people do need support and reassurance and the work that the support group is doing is pretty invaluable. I can’t run a marathon in my condition but I can write.”
