Big-hearted Youngsters help raise funds for defibrillator

Youngsters turned red to to show how much they loved their hearts. To celebrate Love Your Heart Day, children at Markland Hill Primary School swapped their uniform for red clothes in return for a donation to Bolton ICD Support Group’s campaign to put a life-saving defibrillator in all the boroughs schools. A special assembly was led by Year 1/2 Miss Nicola Ewens who has a ICD, and representatives from the group.

She said “We asked the children what Fabrice Muamba and I had in common and the answers included he trained me to play football and we had the same hair. None of them guessed and they were quite taken aback so it brought it quite close to home for them. I have a genetic condition which was picked up when I was three months old. Everybody wore red and raised £270 and we will continue to fundraise towards the cost of a defibrillator. The children also learned about how they could keep their heart healthy on the day.
